The Runnymede Trust's Platform series was initiated to enable senior representatives of mainstream political parties to set out their views on what actions are necessary to tackle race inequality and create a cohesive ethnically diverse society at ease with itself.

In this paper, Rt Hon John Denham MP, the former Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government argued that community cohesion has been at the heart of Labour thinking over the past decade.

A nuanced approach is essential in recognising how race interacts with other social factors, otherwise known as intersectionality. Moreover, there should be a renewed focus on class in Britain; the growing self-confidence of minority communities can be seen as a threat to communities under pressure.

The paper also includes academic responses from Professors Derek McGhee, University of Southampton; Mary J Hickman, London Metropolitan University; and Chris Gaine, University of Chichester.
