40th Anniversary Lecture
Bhaji at the BFI
Gurinder Chadha on race, racism and a hugely successful film career
Forty years of campaigning for race equality were marked by a celebratory event at the BFI Southbank in December, 2008, the highlights of which can be seen in this 25-minute video.
One of Britain's most well-known filmmakers, Gurinder Chadha, looks back over her career in conversation with firebrand human rights campaigner and BFI governor, Shami Chakrabarti.
Chadha is the writer and director of the groundbreaking Bhaji on the Beach (1993) and the highly acclaimed Bend it Like Beckham (2002), to name just two. Watch the video to hear her reflect on her experience of race and racism growing up in multi-ethnic Britain.
