Equality and Cohesion

Runnymede have a long interest in exploring the relationship between equality and cohesion. From the publication of Colour and Citizenship, written by our founder Jim Rose in 1968 to the Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain, we have consistently explored the relationship between fairness, diversity and solidarity.

  • Community Cohesion: More recent projects in this area include our analysis of cohesion policy and conferences from 2001 to the present.
  • Guardians of Race Equality considered the importance of regulation in making sure that equality policy turned into reality in our public services.
  • Our submission to the Commission on Integration and Cohesion considered whether local decision-making bodies can best advance these goals.
  • Preferential Policies: Equal participation is vital for ensuring a desirable cohesive society, and we have argued that 'positive action' may be necessary to achieve fairness for members of disadvantaged groups.
  • Respect as a Justification: We have written a review of government policy on ''Respect''. The best way to advance a coherent respect agenda is to ensure that it treats all Britons fairly and ensures their full participation in democratic society.
  • Northern Ireland Working Together allows Runnymede to think about how our research on equality and cohesion applies in that region.
