New report from the Home Affairs Committee – Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Bill

The report focuses on ‘earned citizenship', and confirms the widespread concern about this concept. Although the committee concludes that the idea that those seeking British citizenship should contribute to British society is uncontroversial, the report is critical about the details of how this criteria will be determined. Compulsory volunteering, active citizenship, probationary citizenship and the requirement of continuous employment are all scrutinised and shown to be unfair and likely create conditions which penalise the most vulnerable and abused migrant groups.

The Bill has gone to the Commons for consideration, and a further draft Immigration Bill, implementing the rest of the Government's proposals, is expected in the autumn. We encourage you to get involved in this important agenda.
