Discrimination and disadvantage - Narrowing the gap
Following the Government's proposal for a new duty on public bodies to address socio-economic disadvantage, the Equality and Diversity Forum and the Runnymede Trust hosted a half-day seminar, giving NGOs, policy makers and academics the opportunity to consider what such a duty would mean in practice.
The objectives of the seminar were:
• To debate the Government's proposal for a ‘new strategic duty on central departments and key public services to address the inequality that arises from socioeconomic disadvantage and place this objective at the core of their policies and programmes'.
• To consider some of the key inter-relationships between socio-economic disadvantage and discrimination based on age, disability, gender, gender identity, race, religion or belief and sexual orientation.
• To give individuals and organisations working in different fields an opportunity to exchange ideas and develop constructive relationships.
Harriet Harman MP and Minister for Women and Equality opened the event by introducing the Government's proposals. This was followed by presentations from Richard Berthoud, University of Essex, Amanda Ariss, Equality and Diversity Forum, and Hilary Fisher, Campaign to End Child Poverty.
