Runnymede comments on Tottenham riots

08 August 2011

Speaking on BBC radio last night, Runnymede director Rob Berkeley urged people to look at the context of Saturday’s disturbances in Tottenham.

Arguing that whilst the weekend’s events should not be condoned in any way, there are similarities with the context of the riots of the 1980s, with high unemployment, a lack of hope and a mistrust of the police prevalent in inner city areas.

He added that this environment can lead to people feeling they do not have a stake in society, claiming that such a level of hopelessness will drive people to desperation.

You can listen to Rob speaking on BBC’s Dotun Adebayo show here (from 0.45.00).
