Oxford University still 'a dream too far for black students?'

15 November 2010

Just one British black Caribbean applicant gained entry to Oxford University in 2009, highlights Runnymede director Rob Berkeley in a recent article for Operation Black Vote.

In the piece, Rob asks whether this reveals a worrying complacency within Britain’s top universities over the issue of race equality.

Drawing on his own experiences at Oxford, he writes: “Back in 1992, I was one of 16 British black Caribbean students in the first year... What has happened in intervening years that could lead to progress having stalled so significantly?”

In a direct response to Rob’s article, a post by Oxford University argues that the bleak figures are, in part, a result of disproportionate numbers of black students applying for Oxford’s most competitive courses compared to their white counterparts.
