Runnymede welcomes Equality Commission's Triennial Review
11 October 2010
Runnymede welcomes the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s triennial review of the state of equality in the UK.
The review highlights that black people are more likely to be excluded from school, stopped and searched, and be in prison, whilst overall poverty through low pay and low income is higher than average for ethnic minorities.
Commenting, Runnymede Director Rob Berkeley said: “Today’s EHRC review clearly shows that race still matters in the UK when it comes to a person’s life chances. The report’s findings echo much of what Runnymede has found in its research over the past few years, whether it be on exclusions, stop and search or financial inclusion”
He added: “Given its pledge to make Britain fairer, the government now has an opportunity to put this into practice in next week’s comprehensive spending review. We look forward to seeing how it plans to tackle these stark inequalities and hope that in its forthcoming spending decisions the already disadvantaged position of the UK’s ethnic minority communities is taken into account”.
