Equality Bill completes parliamentary process
07 April 2010
Last night the Equality Bill completed its final stage of passage through parliament, meaning that it will now become law.
The bill, which was first introduced to the House of Commons almost a year ago, will be sent to the Queen for Royal Assent after MPs yesterday approved amendments made by the House of Lords.
Once the bill receives Royal Assent it will formally become an Act of Parliament and be introduced to the statute book. The provisions in the bill will begin to take effect in the autumn.
The new legislation brings together many of the existing equality laws under one umbrella, which will help to make individuals’ rights clearer to themselves and their employers. Overall, unfair treatment on the grounds of race, gender, age and disability will also be protected against under the legislation.
Full information on the bill's passage through parliament is available on Equalities Office website. Further information is also available on our blog.
