Equality Bill Passed by House of Lords

23 March 2010

The Equality Bill has completed its third reading in the House of Lords and will now return to the House of Commons for further scrutiny.

Changes made in the Lords include adding a power to outlaw caste discrimination and a requirement for political parties to publish information on the diversity of its candidates.

Unfair treatment on the grounds of gender, age and disability will also be better protected against if the bill is successful.

The Equality and Diversity Forum (EDF), of which Runnymede is a member, strongly urges peers to support the bill and allow it to become an Act of Parliament.

The new legislation brings together many of the existing equality laws under one umbrella, which would help to make individuals’ rights clearer to themselves and their employers.
