DCLG annual report and parliamentary written answers

05 March 2010

Today the Communities and Local Government Select Committee published its response to the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) Annual report. As you may be aware, DCLG undertakes much of the Government’s work on race relations and community cohesion. Also of interest, parliamentary written answers have been published on Traveller sites, immigration and the 2011 Census.

The CLG Committee report focuses largely on the housing, planning and fire safety divisions of DCLG, but comes to some broad conclusions which will be relevant to the department’s work as a whole. Of particular interest, it expresses concern that DCLG’s influence over other government departments is not as effective as it could be and argues that it needs to be more of a “big hitter” in Whitehall.

Parliamentary written answers published today include a question from Mark Pritchard MP (Conservative, the Wrekin) on whether the Government will receive representations on proposals to include a Sikh category in the 2011 National Census; questions from Stewart Jackson MP (Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government) on illegal immigrants and tax and business rates on Traveller sites; and a question from Frank Field MP (Labour, Birkenhead) on immigration controls.
