A New Approach to Young Adult Offenders

15 January 2010

Ten recommendations on how to approach young adults in the criminal justice system are pulled together in the Young Adult Manifesto, which is published by the Transition to Adulthood (T2A) Alliance and incorporates Runnymede’s suggestions.

The report is the product of 18 months’ research and 12 weeks of extensive consultation, which brought about conclusions on how to frame a new approach to young adult offenders.

Runnymede submitted thoughts on how the T2A Alliance's draft document might be strengthened with regards to race equality. We were particularly concerned that the manifesto should address the factors that influence the severe over-representation of young BME people in the criminal justice system.

Many of the ideas we proposed in our response were incorporated into their final publication.

Runnymede would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the T2A Alliance on producing a strong and well-argued report.
