Migration, Racism and Religion Conference

A conference on faith organisations, sanctuary and civil society, organised by Runnymede and the Centre for Research on Migration, Refugees and Belonging (CMRB).
The event, beginning at 9.15am, will bring together activists, academics and race equality groups, as they consider the increasingly prominent role of religious organisations in supporting refugees and battling racism.
Speakers on the day will include:
Prof Chetan Bhatt of Goldsmith's College; Rev Angus Ritchie of Strangers into Citizens; Humera Khan of An-Nisa; Rev Arlington Trotman of the Churches' Commission for Migrants in Europe; Prof Rob Furbey of Sheffield Hallam University; Mufti Barkatulla, Imam of Finchley Mosque; Dr David Muir of Evangelical Alliance; Dr Edie Freidman of the Jewish Council for Racial Equality; Dr Abel Ugba of the University of East London; Prof Pnina Werbner of Keele University; Dr Rob Berkeley of Runnymede; Pragna Patel of Southall Black Sisters; Dr Peter Morey, Prof Nira Yuval-Davis and Dr Philip Marfleet of the University of East London.
Among the issues they will be discussing are the following questions:
- Who addresses refugee/migrant interests at the local and national levels?
- How do faith initiatives relate to broader issues of racism in UK society?
- What is the place of ideas about refuge and sanctuary within religious currents today?
- To what extent have faith organisations reinvigorated principles eroded by the secular state?
- What are the outcomes for community relations, identities and the politics of belonging?
