Altab Ali murdered in Whitechapel, London

The Runnymede Trust Bulletin, No 99,  reported that:

Anti racist demo, Newham © Phil MaxwellA young Bengali, 24 year old Altab Ali, died on the night of Thursday, May 4, as a result of the neck injuries he received in an apparently unprovoked knife attack. Mr. Ali had been waylayed in Alder Street, Whitechapel as he was making his way home from work. This attack came only weeks after 10 year old Kennith Singh was beaten and stabbed to death in Plaistow, East London. Following these and other incidents an 'Action Committee against Racist attacks' has been formed in the East End involving local immigrant organisations and trade unions. On 14 May the Committee called a protest march against the attacks. About 4,000 people, many of whom were from the Bengali community, marched from Brick Lane/Whitechapel Road to Hyde Park where a rally was held. Later the marchers went to Downing Street and handed in a petition.

In January 1979 it was reported that 'a juvenile boy of sixteen was sentenced to seven years in jail for stabbing Mr Altab Ali... causing his death. Two other teenagers who took part in the criminal act were each given prison sentences of three years on robbery charges.'
