First Black Council Leader

Britain's first black council leader took up his post in April 1985. Bernie Grant, a former trade union official born in Guyana, became leader of Haringey Borough council in London following the resignation of the former Labour group leader. Grant, who had been a councillor since 1978, made it clear that he would be pursuing the nomination for the safe Labour parliamentary seat of Tottenham.
