Unemployment Rate For Black People

The unemployment rate for black people was almost twice that for white people, according to the Labour Force Survey 1981. For the male economically-active population as a whole, the unemployment rate was 9.9%. For non-whites, however, it was 17.2%, with West Indians/Guyanese and Pakistanis/Bangladeshis having the highest unemployment rates of 20.6% and 20.4% respectively.

For women, the picture was similar. The unemployment rate for the population as a whole was 8.9%, but for non-white women the rate was 15.8%. Pakistani and Bangladeshi women had an unemployment rate of 19% and for Indian women the rate was 17.7%.
