Criticism of Race Question in 1981 Census

The British Society for Social Responsibility in Science (BSSRS), in a pamphlet published on 17 October 1979, stated that the Census question on race could not provide information which would be of any use to black people or those fighting racism. They also stated that its inclusion was politically dangerous because it encouraged playing the 'number game' with black people and served to legitimate individuals' 'race' as the basis for Government policy decisions.
