European anti-Discrimination training
The seminar is directed at NGOs and trade union representatives. The same training seminar will take place in Glasgow in February-March 2008. This event is funded by the European Commission and aims to develop the capacity of civil society dealing with anti-discrimination. The programme has been developed by an international team, but each seminar will take into account the context of the country in which it is held. In the UK, the seminar will focus on the government's proposals for single equality legislation and what this means for concepts of discrimination, awareness raising, dialogue with the government,
and how Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and trade unions can work successfully together.
is part of a European Commission funded project: Anti-discrimination and Diversity Training (VT/2006/009). The project is managed b the Human European Consultancy (www.humanconsultancy.com) in partnership with the Migration Policy Group (www.migpolgroup.com) and is carried out in all EU member states and Turkey.
In the UK, the Runnymede Trust is a partner in this project and responsible for carrying out 2 two-day seminars in the UK. The first seminar will take place on 21 & 22 November in London. The second seminar will take place in early 2008 in Glasgow. This seminar (and others in future) will be carried out by 6 trainers from the UK trained by a team of international experts.
The seminars are for NGOs and trade unions that are active or want to become active in combating discrimination on the grounds of race or ethnic origin, age, disability, religion or belief, and sexual orientation.
Its objective is to develop the capacity of civil society dealing with anti-discrimination. The programme, developed by an international team, will include:
- The key concepts of discrimination as included in UK law, in particular in relation to the recently published Discrimination Law Review, as well as EU law.
- How NGOs and trade unions can develop their role in awareness raising, dialogue with government policy and support to victims, and build networks, both locally and regionally with other stakeholders.
A total of 40 participants, representing NGOs and trade unions, will be selected to attend the seminar, for which not costs will be involved (travel and accommodation for people who have to stay overnight will be paid for by the organisers).

13 March 2007
Consultation on 13 March, 2007, 10.30 to 16.30, at the Resource Centre, London, N7 6PA
UKREN is involved in the European Programme on Migration and Integration programme, an initiative of the Network of European Foundation with the aim to encourage positive attitudes towards investment in integration policies. Together with the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, UKREN is organising a consultation to increase the level of understanding of integration issues in the UK, from the perspective of European policy and funding. The event will bring together around 50 participants, including Migrant Community Organisations, and develop understanding amongst key NGO and civil society stakeholders of the issues and how Europe can relate to the UK policy making process.Read the Seminar Programme and Briefing Paper
UKREN AGM
UKREN will hold its 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 26 April 2007 at the Commission for Racial Equality offices in London.
Since its establishment in 1996 the network has been steadily growing. In 2007 the membership embraces more than 150 organisations, involved in race relations and working to combat racism at local, national and European level. In the last 4 years UKREN has assumed a growing range of responsibilities on complex race relations issues at European level and in the UK context. It is therefore increasingly important to secure active members' engagement. The Constitution of 2002 has been redrafted to correspond to the areas of activities and programmes UKREN is involved in and to allow for a new management structure which is able to oversee and define strategic priorities and directions for UKREN. The UKREN Management Committee is therefore submitting a resolution to that effect and hopes that UKREN will adopt the amended Constitution at its forthcoming Annual General Meeting on 26 April 2007.
