Runnymede at the UN: We have arrived in Geneva

Posted by klara 22 August 2011 : CERD , General ,

Runnymede is part of UK NGOs Against Racism, a group of race equality organisations which are taking their concerns about the government's inaction on race equality to the United Nations.

UK NGOs Against Racism consists of:

  • The Runnymede Trust
  • Discrimination Law Association
  • Equanomics
  • JUST West Yorkshire
  • Migrant Rights Network
  • Cambridge Racial Incident Support Project
  • Irish Travellers Movement in Britain
  • Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities
  • Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights

Runnymede is coordinating the input of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to the UK government’s imminent examination by CERD, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Later this week, the government’s commitment to race equality will come under scrutiny by the Committee, which will examine what actions the government is taking to challenge racism and promote race equality.

We've come to Geneva to make sure the UN focuses on the most pressing issues during the Government’s examination, which is taking place on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 August 2011. On Monday we will be presenting our report to the Committee, when we will highlight our key concerns about race equality in the UK.

As well as presenting our evidence to the UN, we're also engaging in some active lobbying of specific members of the Committee, to urge them to ask the most important questions when they grill the Government over the next few days.

We have already met with one Committee member, who has given us some great tips on how to successfully push our agenda... and we've got a heads up that that they will be particularly interested in the riots and the evictions at Dale Farm.

Keep checking in on our blog for more on our progress in Geneva!
